CanalAVIST streams International Conference on Sustainable Development in the Context of Climate Change to Vietnam and France
CanalAVIST streams the International Conference on Sustainable Development in the context of Climate Change held from 24-25 September in Thailand to audience in Asian Institute of Technology Center in Vietnam and in Polytech Nice France. SDCC is organized by the Asian Institute of Technology with the support of the French Cooperation Thailand, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) and SCG Paper. SDCC is also supported by Regional Climate Change Adaptation Knowledge Platform for Asia.
UNESCAP Executive Secretary Dr. Noeleen Heyzer, inaugurated the conference which gathered partners and stakeholders to discuss emerging and urgent issues and plan joint research efforts. She remarked her joy of having participants from Vietnam, not restricting participation in different countries without actually being in one place and furthered that this was making full use of information technology to expand the reach of the conference while limiting the carbon footprint impact by lowering the need for travel.
The objectives of SDCC is to (1) bring together thought-leaders, research groups and SDCC experts to reflect on future research, design action plans and agenda to face emerging issues and urgent themes in climate change adaptation and mitigation; (2) consolidate AIT’s research efforts and partnerships by providing a platform to discuss shared initiatives with like-minded stakeholders and partners; and (3) launch AIT’s center for climate change research and action.
Sessions were held for each thematic sub-group area. The concluding session of the planned workshop facilitated discussion to generate synergy and coherence in sustainable development and climate change research among donor groups, scientists and AIT network of partners and collaborators. The six knowledge sub-areas include:
• Vulnerability and Disaster Risk Reduction
• Water Resources and Coastal Adaptation
• Urban and Rural Sustainability
• Low Carbon Society and Renewable Technology
• Agriculture, Land Use and Forestry
• Cleaner Production and Waste Refineries
AIT has been engaged in cutting-edge research on sustainable development and climate change. This research effort gained renewed significance as climate change has emerged as a crucial issue of our time. Incorporated into AIT’s Strategic Plan 2013 is the consolidation of research efforts and creation of a niche that will harness the Institute’s range of network, experience and expertise.
SDCC broadcasted to AIT Center Vietnam and Polytech Nice in France (Europe) drew onsite participation at 150 in AIT Thailand and remote audience of 60 in Vietnam (both from AITCV and National Center for Scientific and Technological Information Vietnam). Polytech Nice participated online through a stream in the afternoon of 24 September with an audience of 20. This is the first event in the field of Climate Change broadcasted over CanalAVIST. Vietnam Research and Education Network (VinaREN) facilitated the technical set up to receive the stream of SDCC.
CanaAVIST streams high quality video through the Euro-Asian high speed research and education network TEIN3 in ASEAN and worldwide to deliver a top quality remote presence experience to higher education and research institutions in the region in an efficient and affordable manner.
A part of the ASEAN Virtual Institute of Science and Technology (AVIST) and the ASEAN Science and Technology Research and Education Network Alliance (ASTRENA) under ASEAN Committee for Science and Technology, CanalAVIST provides channels for seamless education, teaching, training, conferencing, lectures and talks through ASEAN countries and beyond, for researchers and students. CanaAVIST technical platform is managed by the Internet Education and Research Laboratory (intERLab) at the Asian Institute of Technology.
CanalAVIST is set to broadcast the Asian School on Computer Science and the International Workshop on Biomedical Engineering Research and Education Collaboration on November 2009.
